AJUGA Ajuga reptans
Ajuga is a low growing, herbaceous groundcover, and is fast growing. The
plants generally reach 3" to 4" tall, and will easily spread to cover any
area. Hardy in zone 3 to 9. CULTIVARS
Ajuga reptans 'Atropurpurea' Bronzy-purple foliage with dark purplish blue flowers. Ajuga reptans 'Burgundy Glow' Leaves are burgundy, pink, creamy white and green. Slightly less hardy. Ajuga reptans'Catlins Giant ' An extra large cultivar with bronzy metallic foliage, large blue spiked flower. Ajuga reptans 'Pink Surprise' Green-bronze leaves with pink flowers. Ajuga pyramidalis 'Metallica Crispa' Very slow to spread with dark bronze wrinkled spinach looking leaves.
Ajugas prefer a well drained acidic loam soil. They can tolerate heavier
soils to some extent provided drainage is adequate. With shallow roots, ajugas
will need some extra water in times of drought. Ajugas prefer some light to moderate
shade in hotter climates. Generally ajugas require very little maintenance (just
some periodic trimming to keep them in bounds).
Ajugas are generally used as a lawn substitute in small areas, for borders
in the front of shrubbery, or as an accent plant.
