Planting Instructions
Good site preparation is essential to success in planting a
ground cover bed. It has been said that if you spend $5.00 for a plant you should
spend $50.00 for the hole. We recommend the following steps in planting your ground
cover.
- Remove all existing grass, weeds, and other vegetation.
- Work the soil to a depth of 6 to 8 inches, incorporating in additional
organic matter (peat moss, compost, etc.) if needed.
- If you are using mulch, apply 1" to 2" before planting.
- Using a trowel, open a planting hole, place the plant in the hole and firm
soil around to the level of the crown of the plant. Then fill mulch around the
plant.
- Water the plants in when you are finished planting the bed.
Your groundcover will need periodic waterings until it becomes established.
Fertilization at monthly intervals during the growing season will help your groundcover
become established much more quickly. Herbicides may be used to help control weeds
until the groundcover begins to suppress the weeds. We suggest that you contact
your local extension agent for recommendations as to what herbicide to use.
Planting your groundcover in staggered rows will result in
a quicker cover.
